What Does Humanism Mean to You?
Humanism to us means recognizing the dignity and value of every human being regardless of religion, tribe, or nationality. Many members of our community have chosen a humanist worldview grounded in reason, compassion, and shared responsibility. We believe in working together to build a better future through cooperation, education, and ethical action. At the Zamanakoy Humanist Orphanage, these values guide our commitment to nurturing children in an environment of kindness, equality, and respect while promoting self-reliance and community support.
Project Description
This project seeks $600 in funding to purchase a yam flour processing machine for the Zamanakoy Humanist Orphanage in Maradi, Niger Republic. Building on our small-scale yam farming initiative, this project aims to add value to our agricultural produce through post-harvest processing. Instead of relying solely on the sale or consumption of fresh yams, the orphanage will process harvested yams into flour, which has a longer shelf life, is easier to store, and commands a higher market value. The yam flour processing machine will enable efficient drying, grinding, and packaging of yams into flour for both household use and commercial sale. In addition to supporting internal food needs, the machine will also be used to provide milling services to members of the local community for a small fee. This service will create a new income stream for the orphanage while meeting an existing demand for accessible and affordable food processing services in the area. The project will be managed by Hassanah Fatimata with assistance from trained community members, ensuring proper use, maintenance, and sustainability of the equipment.
Contribution to Long-Term Sustainability for the Orphanage
Economic Sustainability
The sale of yam flour and income from milling services will provide a steady and diversified revenue stream. Profits will be reinvested into the orphanage’s operations, including food, education, and future agricultural expansion.
Social Sustainability
The project will serve both the orphanage and the wider community by offering accessible processing services. It also promotes skill development in agro-processing and small business management.
Operational Sustainability
The machine requires basic maintenance and can be operated locally with minimal technical expertise. Its continuous use for both internal processing and community services ensures long-term viability.
