$88 to GoFundMe for Alexandr Zamusinski - he is an asylum seeker from Moldova (post-Soviet Eastern Europe), the country he fled a decade ago due to fears of religious persecution. After seeing his friends and colleagues imprisoned, Alex escaped to the United States, where he found solace and intellectual opportunities to explore the role of religion and secularism in global geopolitics. He will earn his PhD in the Study of Religion at the University of California, Riverside, in Spring 2025. He has already published two articles and has two more in the publishing pipeline. Additionally, Alex is under contract with Oxford University Press for a co-edited volume that will be published in 2026. Overall, he is a rising star in his field.
When Alex arrived in the USA in 2015, he sought asylum and began working through the US immigration system legally. Now, nine years later, after going through all the proper legal channels, he was abruptly informed in February 2025 that his asylum case is closed. He was also notified that his family is now under removal (deportation) proceedings under Section 240 of the Immigration and Nationality Act. Soon, his family will appear before an immigration judge and the Department of Homeland Security's prosecutor to plead their case against the deportation.
After attempting to move his case from immigration court back to USCIS, Alex was informed that, while the case was indeed closed due to an administrative error, it had already been transferred to the Department of Justice, and only the immigration judge now has power over their case. Now, Alex must hire an immigration lawyer who specializes in asylum cases and plead his case to claim a constitutional right that should never have been rescinded in the first place. Alex has a wife and school-aged son. He lives frugally on a graduate student income (not much). The immigration lawyer specializing in asylum cases will cost $8-9,000. Anything you can do to support this stellar graduate student and his family would be really, really helpful.
