What does humanism mean to you?

Humanism, to us, means focusing on human well-being as the most important goal in society. It is about using reason, compassion, and cooperation to solve everyday problems and improve lives. We believe that people can create positive change through practical action, without relying on supernatural beliefs. Our values are rooted in empathy, equality, and responsibility, and we aim to reflect these principles in everything we do as a collective.

In our community, where many people face daily economic challenges, humanism means taking initiative to support one another through sustainable and practical projects. It encourages us to create opportunities, promote dignity, and build solutions that directly benefit people’s lives. Through our work, we try to show that small, cooperative efforts can lead to meaningful improvements in both livelihoods and community well-being.

Project Description

The Kpakpa Humanist Collective is seeking $600 in funding to establish a small-scale community laundry service in Dapaong. This project is designed to provide an affordable and reliable laundry option for local residents while creating a steady source of income for the collective. Many people in our community do not have access to convenient washing facilities, and handwashing clothes can be time-consuming and physically demanding, especially for working individuals and families. By setting up a simple laundry service, we aim to reduce this burden while offering a useful and accessible service.

The business will operate using basic washing machines and manual support where needed, with members of the collective managing daily activities in shifts. Customers will be able to bring their clothes for washing and drying at a small fee, making the service both affordable and sustainable. The project will start on a modest scale, with the goal of gradually expanding as income increases. Responsibilities among members will include washing, drying, ironing, customer service, and managing daily records of income and expenses.

This initiative will not only generate income but also build practical skills among members, including teamwork, customer service, and small business management. It reflects humanist values by addressing a real community need through cooperation and practical action. Over time, the laundry service will help the collective become more financially independent, allowing us to fund other humanist activities and projects that benefit the wider community.

Expected Income from Project, with Timeline

The laundry service is expected to begin operations within the first two weeks after setup. During the first month, the project is expected to serve around 5–10 customers per day, with each service costing approximately $1–$2 depending on the volume of clothes. This would generate about $5–$20 per day, or approximately $150–$600 for the first month.

By the second and third months, as awareness increases, the number of customers could grow to 10–20 per day, generating about $10–$40 daily, or $300–$1,200 monthly. Part of the income will be reinvested into the business for maintenance, water supply, and additional materials, while the remaining funds will support members and future projects.

Benefits to your Community

The community laundry service will provide a convenient and affordable solution for washing clothes, saving time and effort for many residents. It will especially benefit individuals who are busy, elderly, or unable to wash large amounts of clothing by hand. The project will also create a reliable income stream for members of the collective, improving their financial stability.

In addition, the initiative will promote cooperation, skill development, and small-scale entrepreneurship within the group. By providing a practical service that meets a real need, the project will strengthen community relationships and demonstrate how humanist values can lead to meaningful and sustainable improvements in everyday life.
