What does humanism mean to you?
Humanism means believing in people and in human dignity. We choose to live by reason, kindness, and shared responsibility. To us, humanism focuses on real human needs and does not rely on miracles or divine intervention. We believe every person has a role in making society better.
Humanism teaches us to think using evidence, to act with compassion, and to speak with honesty. It moves us away from fear-based beliefs and toward practical solutions. We support helping the poor, protecting the weak, and expanding access to education because it is the right thing to do, not because of religious reward.
We believe people can stand together, question harmful traditions, and build a fairer world through critical thinking and cooperation. Humanism calls us to see life clearly and make choices that lift others up. We proudly identify as humanists, trusting science, compassion, and collective effort to solve human problems.
For us, humanism is also about action. It means helping people gain skills, earn a living, protect the environment, and build a better future through honest work and solidarity. Every person matters, and no one should suffer because of poverty, belief, or background.
Project Description:
This project will train vulnerable youth and women in Bulabulin Ward, Nguru to make sandals and simple shoes from recycled vehicle tires. Old tires are common waste materials and often cause environmental problems. This project will turn waste into useful products.
Participants will learn basic cutting, shaping, stitching, and finishing skills. They will also learn safety, teamwork, and honest business practices. The training will last one week and support 20–25 participants. The goal is to help them gain a practical skill that can generate income and reduce waste.
Budget:
Used vehicle tires = $65.
Hand tools (cutters, knives, hammers, punches) = $90.
Adhesives, nails, and stitching materials = $60.
Protective gear (gloves, goggles) = $25.
Training materials and transport = $60.
Total: $300.
Expected Income from Project, with Timeline:
After training, participants can start producing sandals within 1 month. Each pair can sell locally for a small profit. Income will help participants support themselves and continue production.
Benefits to your Community:
This project reduces waste, protects the environment, and creates income opportunities. It helps unemployed youth and women learn a useful skill. The community benefits from affordable footwear, cleaner surroundings, and empowered individuals who can support their families.
