What Humanism Means to Us
For many of our members, our journey toward humanism began when we started questioning religious beliefs and the role of religion in creating division and conflict in our communities. In parts of Mozambique, we have witnessed how extremism has caused fear, instability, and suffering. These experiences led us to embrace humanism as a philosophy based on reason, compassion, and shared human values.
Humanism encourages us to work together, support one another, and improve our communities through practical actions such as farming, education, and cooperation. It teaches us that all people deserve dignity and equal opportunity, and that we can solve our problems collectively through effort and understanding. For us, humanism is about building a peaceful, productive, and supportive community where everyone contributes to a better future.
Project Description
The Mozambique Humanist Community Farm is seeking $1,600 in funding to establish a community-based grinding mill shop. Currently, crops harvested from our community garden are stored or sold as raw grains. Without local processing infrastructure, our community faces significant challenges:
Post-Harvest Waste: Raw grains spoil quickly due to poor storage conditions and lack of immediate processing.
Low Profit Margins: Selling unprocessed grains yields minimal financial returns for the collective.
Dependence on Outside Facilities: Group members must travel long distances and pay high fees to grind their harvests.
By establishing a local grinding mill shop, the community will process raw grains directly into high-value finished products (such as flour). This initiative will prevent post-harvest waste, significantly improve profit margins, and establish a self-sustaining business managed by the humanist group. The facility will serve both our community farm and nearby smallholder farmers.
Budget (Total: $1,600)
The following items constitute the essential hardware and setup materials required to launch the grinding mill shop:
Commercial Diesel Grain Grinding Mill (with Engine): $950
Digital Platform Weighing Scale (Up to 300kg): $120
Reference: Alibaba - Electronic Platform Weighing Scale
Heavy-Duty Manual Hand Sealing Machine & Packaging Tools: $80
Reference: Alibaba - Hand Impulse Sealer for Flour Bags
Basic Materials for Shop Installation & Protective Housing: $200
Petrol Al-multipurpose Grinder: $250
Expected Income & Timeline
Income Potential
Processing raw grains into finished flour will drastically maximize market value. This enterprise is expected to increase the community farm's income by $400–$700 per month through direct flour sales and affordable milling services offered to neighboring smallholders.
Project Timeline
Weeks 1–2: Finalize procurement and purchase the mill machinery and tools.
Weeks 3–4: Delivery, safe transport to Cabo Delgado, and structural shop setup.
Month 2: Installation of the mill, calibration, and initial testing with farm grains.
Months 3–5: Full-scale processing operations to eliminate post-harvest waste and begin local retail distribution.
Month 6+: Steady profit generation and integration of external smallholder milling services.
Community Benefits
Waste Reduction: Prevents post-harvest spoilage by instantly converting perishable raw grains into stable finished products.
Economic Growth: Generates substantially higher profits for the community farm to reinvest in future projects.
Local Access: Provides a close, affordable milling alternative for nearby smallholder farmers.
Food Security: Ensures a continuous, reliable supply of processed food staples within the region.
Humanist Solidarity: Strengthens cooperative bonds and self-reliance within the secular community.
