Kenya: Water Pump for Humanist Orphanage Orchard & Garden
Kenya: Water Pump for Humanist Orphanage Orchard & Garden
Water Pump Generator and 3,000-Litre Water Tank for Irrigation
1. Background
The Humanist Mutual Aid Network Farm was established in 2018 with support from the Humanist Mutual Aid Network. Since its inception, the farm has played a vital role in sustaining a feeding program for orphaned children, ensuring they receive consistent and nutritious meals.
Over time, the project has proven to be both impactful and sustainable. Due to its success, we have acquired an additional piece of land adjacent to the existing farm in order to expand agricultural production and meet the growing needs of the children under our care.
2. Rationale for the Project
The number of children supported by our program has increased, and many have now progressed to secondary school, significantly raising the cost of education (school fees, uniforms, and learning materials).
To respond to these increased financial demands, we are expanding our farming activities so that the project can generate more food and income.
The expanded farm will operate under the following structure:
• 70% of produce will be used in the feeding program for orphans
• 30% of produce will be sold to support education costs, especially for those in secondary school
However, this expansion has created a new challenge: adequate irrigation.
3. Current Challenge
Our irrigation system has been compromised due to the breakdown of our existing generator, which was previously used to pump water for the farm.
We attempted to repair the generator, but after assessment, we were advised that:
• The generator is no longer viable for repair
• It cannot handle the increased pumping capacity required for the expanded farm
In addition, with the expansion of the farm, the current water storage is insufficient. We require a larger water tank to ensure consistent water supply for irrigation across the entire farm.
4. Proposed Solution
We are seeking funding to purchase:
• A new water pump generator capable of supporting the expanded irrigation needs
• A 3,000-litre water tank to increase water storage capacity and ensure reliable irrigation
This investment will enable us to maintain consistent crop production throughout the seasons, including during dry periods.
5. Budget Breakdown
• Water Pump Generator $ 450
• Water Pump $ 150
Total $ 600
6. Expected Outcomes
With the installation of a new generator and additional water storage, we expect:
• Reliable irrigation across the expanded farm
• Increased crop yields due to consistent water supply
• Improved sustainability of the feeding program
• Increased income generation to support secondary education for orphans
7. Profit Projection
With the expanded farm and improved irrigation system:
Cost of Water Pump $ 450
Cost of Generator $ 150
Total Requested $ 600
Estimated profit from farm produce in the first month of harvesting: US $1,500
Explanation: The projected US $1,500 indicated in the proposal refers to the gross profit (total value of produce) expected from the expanded farm after harvesting. This higher projection is based on the fact that we have acquired an additional, larger piece of land adjacent to the existing Humanist Global Charity Farm, the expanded farm allows for increased cultivation and higher yields
The net profit will be calculated after subtracting the cost of the requested irrigation equipment. Gross profit: $1,500, Less equipment cost: $600. As such, Estimated net profit: $900.
It is important to note that the current request does not include full farming setup costs, which significantly improves the net return.
Seeds are already available from previous support
The current request focuses only on irrigation infrastructure (generator and water tank)
This income will directly support:
• School fees for orphaned children in secondary school
• Educational materials and uniforms
• Continued support for the feeding program
8. Impact
This project will strengthen a program that has been running successfully since 2018. The farm has already demonstrated its ability to:
• Sustain a feeding program for vulnerable children
• Reduce operational costs through food self-sufficiency
• Generate income for educational support
By investing in irrigation infrastructure, we will scale this impact, ensuring that no child in our program goes hungry and that more children can continue their education without interruption.
9. Conclusion
The expansion of the Humanist Mutual Aid Network Farm represents a critical step toward long-term sustainability. However, without a reliable irrigation system, the success of this expansion is at risk.
We therefore kindly request US $600 to purchase a water pump generator and a 3,000-litre tank, which will enable us to fully utilize the expanded land and significantly increase both food production and income.
This investment will directly contribute to the wellbeing and education of orphaned children, ensuring the continuation and growth of a program that has been making a meaningful difference since 2018.
