What does humanism mean to your group?

I (Esther) grew up in a devout Christian family in Ghana, where faith was woven into the fabric of daily life. But as I ventured into the world beyond my community, I found herself questioning the beliefs I had held so dearly. Intrigued by the perspectives of renowned atheists and humanists, I delved into their works with an open mind. Through the writings of thinkers like Richard Dawkins, Bertrand Russell, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali, I discovered a profound liberation in their arguments for reason, science, and humanism. Their eloquent critiques of religion's role in society resonated deeply with my own experiences and observations. With each page turned, I felt the weight of dogma lifting from my shoulders, replaced by a sense of empowerment and intellectual freedom. Embracing humanism and atheism, I found solace in the beauty of the natural world and the boundless potential of humanity, charting my own path with courage and conviction. Humanism for me and my group means that Humanists are accountable to humanity, not to a deity. We give our lives meaning through how we live them. We reject violence as a means to spread beliefs. Humanism respects people, not ideas.

Project Description

The Computer Centre in Takoradi serves as a critical digital learning hub for humanist women who rely on its resources for education, skill development, communication, and livelihood opportunities. However, the Centre currently suffers from a severe shortage of computers, limiting the number of women who can access its services at any given time. This challenge hampers progress toward digital literacy and economic empowerment for the women who depend on this facility.

To address this pressing need, we are launching a micro-project to purchase four (4) laptop computers at a total cost of $900. These laptops will significantly expand the Centre’s capacity and help bridge the digital divide experienced by many women in the community.

This project is generously funded by HuMAN, who has previously supported the Centre and continues to invest in the empowerment of humanist women in Ghana. Through this new round of support, HuMAN is enabling us to make technology more accessible, inclusive, and impactful for those who need it most.

Utility of the New Computers

The laptops will be used for:

● Digital literacy training (e.g., computer basics, internet navigation, and software use)

● Vocational and business development training (e.g., graphic design, online marketing, resume writing, proposal development)

● Remote learning and online courses

● Access to humanist literature and global human rights resources

● Communication and networking tools (email, video conferencing, social media engagement)

Impact on Sustainability

By increasing access to digital tools, this initiative will:

● Empower women with practical skills that enhance their employability and income generation potential

● Foster independent learning and professional growth, enabling women to explore sustainable livelihoods such as freelancing, e-commerce, and virtual assistance

● Strengthen the sense of community and solidarity among humanist women by improving their ability to collaborate and share resources

● Contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Computer Centre as a reliable resource for humanist development and empowerment

● With HuMAN’s continued support, this project represents a meaningful step toward digital inclusion and sustainable self-reliance for women in Takoradi. We are confident that the addition of these four laptops will make a lasting difference in the lives of many.

Project Timeline and Estimated profit

The estimated project timeline for enhancing digital access for humanist women in Takoradi spans approximately three months. In the first week, laptops will be procured and configured, followed by implementation of digital literacy and vocational training programs in the second week. By the third week, participants will begin applying their skills through online courses, freelance work, and small business ventures. While this is a non-profit initiative, the estimated social return on investment includes potential income generation of $100–$200 per participant per month within six months, through digital freelancing, e-commerce, and enhanced employability, translating into sustainable economic benefits for both individuals and the broader community.

Explain the Benefits to your Community:

● Digital Empowerment: By providing access to computers and the internet, the Humanist Women in Takoradi will significantly improve their digital literacy, allowing them to pursue online work and entrepreneurship opportunities.

● Sustainable Energy Access: With the solar panel system, the center will enjoy a reliable and cost-effective energy source, promoting environmental sustainability while minimizing operational costs.

● Community Development: This project will foster a sense of community and shared responsibility, where the women can collaborate, learn, and support each other in their digital ventures.

● Economic Empowerment: The knowledge and skills gained in the computer center will directly translate into increased economic opportunities for the women, contributing to their financial independence and social mobility.
