What does humanism mean to you?

I was born into a Muslim family in Burkina Faso, and for most of my life, Islam was everything around me my family’s pride, the rhythm of our days, and the way we connected to the wider community. I prayed, I fasted, I followed the rules because that was what was expected. But deep inside, I carried questions that no one wanted to hear. Each time I asked, I was told to just believe, to stop thinking too much. That silence began to suffocate me, because I wanted to live honestly with my doubts and not just bury them. So I stopped believing in God and another thing that has to do with religion and spirituality.

What made me turn toward humanism was not rebellion, but a search for truth and kindness. I saw too much suffering justified by religion: women told they were worth less, children raised in fear instead of love, and people treated badly simply because they believed differently. It didn’t feel right to me. I started reading and talking with others, especially online, and I discovered humanism—a way of life that says people come first, that kindness and reason matter more than rigid rules. It felt like breathing fresh air after being trapped for so long.

For me, humanism is also about returning to the heart of our Burkinabè culture our music, our dances, our traditions of solidarity and respect that existed before religion came. I realized I don’t need a holy book to tell me to care for my neighbor or to respect human dignity; these are values we already hold as a people. So leaving Islam was not leaving my community it was finding a freer way to love it. Today, I call myself a humanist because I believe in people, in equality, and in building a future where we are valued simply for being human.

Project Description

This project involves the purchase and delivery of a commercial tyre pump to Yusuf Brahima, a humanist resident of a rural community in Burkina Faso, with the aim of promoting self-employment, local service provision, and economic empowerment. The initiative is funded by HuMAN, a California-based nonprofit organization committed to supporting grassroots livelihoods and sustainable development in underserved regions.

In many rural parts of Burkina Faso, access to tyre inflation and repair services is limited or non-existent, particularly for motorcycles, bicycles, carts, and small vehicles used daily for farming, transport, and trade. By equipping Yusuf with a durable, high-capacity commercial tyre pump, the project enables me to establish a small roadside tyre inflation business, serving my community and travelers along nearby roads. The equipment will also allow me to diversify into basic tyre repair services, further increasing my income potential.

I will receive basic training on its use and upkeep, ensuring long-term sustainability. The project is expected to improve local access to transportation services, reduce delays due to flat tyres, and offer Yusuf a reliable, income-generating opportunity that can grow over time.

Benefits to your Community

The project benefits the community by providing easy and affordable access to tyre inflation and basic repair services, which are often scarce in rural areas. This improves the safety and efficiency of local transportation essential for farmers, traders, and families while saving time and reducing costs. By enabling Yusuf Brahima to start a small business, the project creates local employment and encourages skill development. As mobility improves, economic activity in the area is stimulated, supporting market access and trade. Overall, the project strengthens community self-reliance by turning a local resident into a service provider who meets a real and ongoing need.
