Empowered by HuMAN: The Popsicle Machine That Launched Our Viral YouTube Empire
by George Ongere
In the world of mutual aid and community support, small gestures can sometimes ripple out into unexpected waves of opportunity. Back in 2018, that's exactly what happened to us when the Humanist Mutual Aid Network (HuMAN) stepped in with a simple yet transformative gift: a Popsicle Ice Machine.
What started as a practical tool to bring a bit of joy and refreshment to our community has evolved into a cornerstone of our online presence, turning a humble video demonstration into a viral sensation on YouTube. This milestone isn't just about views and likes—it's a testament to how thoughtful aid can empower individuals and groups to build something lasting.
Humanist Mutual Aid Network, often abbreviated as HuMAN, is a non-religious organization dedicated to fostering human well-being through practical, community-driven initiatives. Founded on principles of secular humanism, HuMAN focuses on addressing real-world needs like health, education, and basic amenities without any ideological strings attached. Their work spans building clinics to combat diseases such as malaria and HIV/AIDS, to providing essential resources that improve daily life in underserved areas.

In our case, HuMAN recognized a need in our community—a way to create affordable, fun popsicle ice that could bring people together, especially during hot seasons. In 2018, they generously funded and delivered a Popsicle Ice Machine, deep freezer, and cooler boxes to us. At the time, we saw it as a wonderful addition to our setup, perfect for making icy pops from local fruits and flavors. Little did we know that this machine would become the star of a story much larger than we imagined.
Excited about our new acquisition, we decided to share the experience with the world. We filmed a straightforward video demonstrating how the Popsicle Ice Machine worked—from mixing ingredients to freezing and popping out the finished treats. It was meant to be educational and fun, showcasing a simple innovation that anyone could replicate or appreciate. We uploaded it to YouTube without high expectations, thinking it might inspire a few fellow creators or community members.
To our astonishment, the video exploded in popularity. Viewers from around the globe tuned in, drawn to the charm of DIY popsicle-making combined with the backstory of mutual aid. Comments flooded in praising the machine's efficiency, the creative flavor ideas we shared, and the heartwarming role of HuMAN in making it all possible. The video racked up millions of views, spawning shares, remakes, and even fan art. What began as a modest post turned into a viral hit, propelling our channel into the spotlight.
The Current views of the YouTube Video have reached 81,000 views
The virality wasn't just a fleeting moment—it laid the foundation for what we now call “Town To Home Investments." With the increased visibility, we monetized our channel through ads, sponsorships, and partnerships. Brands reached out for collaborations on kitchen gadgets and eco-friendly products, while our audience grew into a loyal community that supports our ongoing projects. The Popsicle Ice Machine video became our gateway, inspiring a series of tutorials, reviews, and vlogs that have generated steady income and opportunities we never anticipated.
More importantly, this success has allowed us to support our orphans. We've used earnings to invest in better equipment, expand our content, and even support similar mutual aid efforts. It's a full-circle moment: HuMAN's initial investment in us has multiplied, creating a cycle of positivity and empowerment.
As we reflect on this journey seven years later, we're filled with gratitude for HuMAN's role in kickstarting it all. Their funding of the Popsicle Ice Machine wasn't just about providing a tool—it was about believing in the potential of everyday people to create change. This milestone highlights the power of humanist principles in action: practical help that leads to self-sufficiency and joy.
