What Humanism Means to Me

To me, humanism means empowering people through knowledge, reason, and compassion. It means promoting critical thinking, equality, personal responsibility, and freedom from dogma. My work focuses on helping young people learn how to think for themselves and build a society based on evidence, fairness, and human welfare rather than superstition or religious indoctrination.

Project Description

In 2025, I successfully established the Enlightenment Centre and Library at Government Secondary School, Barkin-Ado, which has already begun equipping students with critical thinking skills.

To consolidate this progress and expand the reach of humanist education, my 2026 project is to set up a small office, with a laptop and printer, to kickstart a critical thinking publishing hub for Nasarawa State, Abuja, and eventually all of Nigeria and Africa.

The office will be used for:

  • Writing and publishing critical thinking books for primary and secondary students.

  • Designing educational posters, worksheets, and handouts for schools.

  • Producing humanist-based reading materials for the public.

  • Coordinating training sessions, workshops, and school visits.

  • Managing Enlightenment Centre programs and supervising ongoing projects.

  • Storing books and materials safely.

  • Organizing community reading groups and rational inquiry sessions.

  • Mentoring young people who want to become critical thinkers.

The office ensures a stable, professional, and safe base for long-term humanist activities.

Budget (First $300 Grant)

  1. Portable small office space rental for 1 year – $120

  2. Laptop computer – $150
HP Elitebook 850 or any brand I can get for the stated amount.

  3. 1 Table and two chairs and 1 Banner – $30

Total Budget: $300

Future Expansion Phases (Using April, July, and October Grants)

Second Phase – April 2026 ($300): Printer + Additional Chairs

  • Acquisition of a quality printer worth approximately $300 to produce books, worksheets, handouts, and materials efficiently.

  • Purchase of extra chairs for meetings, reading groups, and community programs.
This strengthens the office as a functional humanist learning space.

Third Phase – July 2026 ($300): Two Additional Laptops

Purchase of two more laptops valued at $300 total.
These will:

  • Support volunteers in editing and designing learning materials

  • Enable group writing sessions with students

  • Expand digital literacy training for youths

  • Increase publishing productivity

Fourth Phase – October 2026 ($300): Small Used Motorcycle

A small used motorcycle will be purchased for:

  • Monitoring school projects in New Karu and surrounding communities

  • Transporting educational materials

  • Visiting humanists, school clubs, and partners

  • Expanding outreach to more towns requesting critical thinking programs

This improves mobility and strengthens the Centre’s presence across Nasarawa State.

Expected Income From the Project (Monthly)

Starting February 2026:

  1. Sales of critical thinking books – $15–$20 per month

  2. General computer services (typing, printing, scanning, small designs) – $10–$15 per month

Total Expected Monthly Income: $25–$35 per month

Income will grow as more books are produced and more people discover the Centre.

Benefits to the Community

  • Students gain access to rational, evidence-based learning materials.

  • Teachers receive secular educational resources that promote critical thinking.

  • Non-religious people gain a safe physical meeting place in Nasarawa.

  • Young people develop intellectual independence and problem-solving skills.

  • The Centre expands humanist visibility and influence in the region.

  • A sustainable hub for long-term publishing and education is created.

This project strengthens humanism in Nigeria by building a foundation for knowledge, reason, and community support.
