What does humanism mean to you?

Humanism means placing human dignity, reason, and compassion at the center of life while taking full responsibility for my choices and actions in a society deeply shaped by tradition, religion, and community expectations; growing up in a culturally rich environment where family ties, respect for elders, solidarity, and shared struggle are strong, I learned the value of people long before questioning beliefs, but it was through humanism that I found a framework that honors those cultural values without relying on the idea of God or religious authority, allowing me to see morality as something that comes from our shared humanity rather than fear or obedience; not believing in God or religions has transformed my life by giving me intellectual freedom, encouraging critical thinking, and helping me live honestly without pretending faith for social acceptance, while also deepening my empathy for others regardless of belief, ethnicity, or background; instead of prayer, I believe in action, instead of divine reward, I believe in human progress, and instead of religious identity, I define myself by how I treat others and contribute to my community, which in Mozambique where poverty, inequality, and social challenges are real has made my commitment to education, social justice, and mutual respect stronger and more practical, grounding my life in responsibility, openness, and hope rooted in people rather than the supernatural.

Project Description

We are planning to establish basic internet connectivity for NextGen Humanists Mozambique members through a Tesla Starlink shared-access setup, enabling communication, education, advocacy, and income-generating activities. The project will be implemented and managed directly by group members, emphasizing self-reliance, transparency, and sustainability. The initial funds will be used to contribute toward equipment access, installation materials, power solutions, and the first month of connectivity, while members will collectively organize the physical setup, including site selection, mounting, security, and basic maintenance. Trained members with technical interest will take responsibility for operating the system, managing user access, scheduling usage, and troubleshooting, ensuring skills are retained within the group rather than outsourced.

To generate income, the Starlink connection will be used as a community internet hub, where members offer low-cost services such as paid Wi-Fi access during set hours, document typing and printing, CV and online job application assistance, digital literacy training, online tutoring, research support, and communication services for local residents and small businesses. Additional income opportunities will include supporting members’ freelance work, remote learning, content creation, and coordination with regional and international humanist networks. Fees will be affordable but consistent, with a clear pricing structure agreed upon by members.

All revenue generated will be pooled into a group sustainability fund used to cover monthly internet subscription costs, basic maintenance, and gradual expansion of services, while a portion will support members directly through stipends, skills development, emergency support, and small project grants. By improving reliable internet access, this initiative will reduce digital exclusion, strengthen organizational capacity, and empower NextGen Humanists Mozambique members to become economically resilient, technologically skilled, and less dependent on external funding, aligning with humanist values of cooperation, responsibility, and human-centered development.
