Why We Are Humanist.
We are humanists in Cameroon because we believe in the power of reason, compassion, and human dignity to shape a better society. In a country where tradition and religious dogma often go unquestioned, humanism offers an alternative rooted in critical thinking, ethical living, and the pursuit of knowledge.
As humanists, we affirm that morality does not require supernatural beliefs. We are guided by empathy, justice, and a sense of responsibility to each other. We advocate for gender equality, freedom of belief, and the rights of all people regardless of tribe, religion, or sexual orientation.
We reject harmful practices justified by superstition and call for a society where education, science, and open dialogue are valued. Our goal is to build inclusive communities, challenge injustice, and empower people to think for themselves.
Being a humanist in Cameroon is not always easy, but it is necessary. It is an act of courage and hope, a commitment to building a future where everyone is free to live, question, and grow.
Project Description
Secular Path Cameroon, a community-based humanist group promoting ethical living, critical thinking, and mutual aid, is launching a sustainable energy initiative to address the growing need for affordable and reliable electricity in our community. The Secular Energy Hub project aims to install a solar-powered charging station that will provide a clean, consistent source of electricity to power small devices such as phones, rechargeable lamps, and radios.
In many parts of Cameroon, including our local community, frequent power cuts and energy poverty hinder communication, education, and small business activities. This project seeks to directly empower the community by creating an accessible and eco-friendly power point for members and neighbors alike.
The charging station will:
Be powered by solar panels with battery storage.
Provide free or low-cost charging services for community members.
Serve as a central hub for Secular Path Cameroon activities, meetings, and educational programs.
Promote awareness around renewable energy and environmental responsibility.
The income generated (where applicable) will be reinvested into community services, including education, health outreach, and future mutual aid projects. This initiative aligns with our humanist values of sustainability, cooperation, and improving human well-being through reason and shared responsibility.
Budget
Solar Panel– $85
Solar Charge Controller (10A–20A) – $18
Energy storage Battery – $95
Inverter – $30
Basic Wiring & Accessories – $20
Charging Shelf or Station Setup – $21
Signage & Branding – $5
Total $274 USD
Expected Income from Project, with Timeline
The solar charging station can be fully delivered and set up within 10 to 14 days, including procurement, installation, and testing. With a small fee of 100 FCFA per charge, the station could earn about 45,000 FCFA (~$75 USD) per month, serving around 15 users daily. After minimal maintenance costs, the system could generate a net profit of approximately $70 USD monthly, recovering its initial cost in less than four months.
Benefits to your Community
