Why We Are Humanist
As the UniMaputo Secular Student Group, we are united by a shared journey from religious backgrounds Christianity and Islam to a worldview grounded in reason, compassion, and a commitment to human dignity. While our paths to atheism have been personal and diverse, we now stand together in embracing humanism as a positive philosophy that emphasizes ethical living without reliance on the supernatural.
We are humanists because we believe in the value and potential of all human beings, regardless of faith, gender, orientation, or background. Our experiences as ex-Muslims and ex-Christians have taught us the importance of critical thinking, freedom of conscience, and the right to question inherited beliefs. Through humanism, we affirm our responsibility to contribute to a more just, inclusive, and rational society starting within our university and radiating outward into our communities.
We are committed to building a space where reason, empathy, and shared humanity guide our actions. We believe education, dialogue, and mutual respect are essential to social progress. As young humanists in Mozambique, we seek to promote secular values, support each other through deconversion journeys, and advocate for the rights of nonbelievers and believers alike to live freely and authentically.
This is why we are humanists not just in belief, but in action.
Purpose of the group
The UniMaputo Secular Student Group was founded to create a safe, inclusive, and empowering space for nonreligious, questioning, and deconverting students at our university. We aim to foster a supportive community where individuals from diverse backgrounds particularly those transitioning from religious traditions can explore their beliefs openly and without fear.
Our core purpose is to promote secular humanist values on campus and in our wider society. We seek to encourage critical thinking, freedom of expression, scientific literacy, and ethical reasoning based on empathy and human welfare, rather than religious dogma.
The group also exists to:
• Provide peer support and solidarity for students who are atheist, agnostic, or humanist especially those facing stigma or isolation due to their beliefs.
• Host open discussions, educational events, and debates around religion, philosophy, ethics, and human rights.
• Advocate for secularism, freedom of conscience, and the separation of religion from public policy and education.
• Collaborate with local and international organizations that support freedom of belief, human rights, and youth empowerment.
As a new group in Mozambique, where secular voices are often marginalized, we hope to be a visible and constructive presence, demonstrating that it’s possible to lead moral, meaningful lives without religion.
Project Proposal:
UniMaputo secular student group is dedicated to fostering a community centered around secular ethics, critical thinking, and inclusive dialogue. As an active student organization, we will regularly host events, distribute educational resources, and engage in campus outreach. To support these efforts effectively, access to a photocopier is essential.
Key reasons for photocopier use:
1 Outreach and Awareness: We distribute flyers, posters, and informational brochures to promote club meetings, guest lectures, and campus-wide initiatives. Printed materials remain a vital tool for reaching students across diverse areas of campus.
2 Educational Programming: Many of our events include printed discussion guides, articles, or curated readings. These enhance engagement and ensure all participants, including those without access to digital devices during meetings, can fully participate.
3 Workshops and Conferences: During larger events, such as interfaith panels or critical thinking workshops, printed agendas and resources help maintain structure and accessibility for attendees.
4 Administrative Requirements: Our club handles membership forms, sign-in sheets, and documentation for university compliance and recordkeeping, all of which require reliable printing and copying capabilities.
Investing in or granting access to a photocopier would directly support the educational mission of the Humanist University Club, enhance campus engagement, and ensure our operations are inclusive and professional.
We appreciate your consideration and are happy to provide further information or usage estimates if needed.
