Why did your group become humanist and what does humanism mean to your group?

As members of the N’djamena Student Rational Society, we have united around a shared conviction that reason, critical thinking, and compassion offer the most reliable foundation for building a just, peaceful, and progressive society. We identify as humanists because we believe that human beings are capable of leading meaningful and ethical lives without relying on belief in God or any form of supernatural authority.

While we fully respect the rights of others to practice religion, each of us, through personal reflection and study, has chosen a path grounded in evidence, logic, and human experience. Our decision to embrace humanism is rooted in the understanding that morality does not require divine origin, but can be shaped by empathy, rational thought, and the shared challenges and values of our human condition. We believe that human rights are universal, that individuals deserve freedom of thought and conscience, and that ethical living is best achieved through dialogue, education, and respect for others' dignity.

In a society where religious belief is often assumed or enforced, we affirm our right not to believe in God, and we do so openly and respectfully. We strive to foster a culture where asking questions is not only allowed but encouraged, where beliefs are tested by reason, and where no one is judged or excluded based on their personal convictions. Our vision is a Chad where every citizen, regardless of faith or non-faith, is treated equally and with respect.

Through our work, we hope to encourage all people, religious or not, to support the principles of freedom of expression, gender equality, scientific literacy, and social justice. We are proud to be part of the growing global humanist movement and look forward to contributing meaningfully to a more rational, compassionate, and inclusive society.

Project Description

The N’Djamena University Rational Society humanist Club is initiating the construction of a Vermiculture Farm and Incubator Shelter as a practical, income-generating project designed to promote scientific innovation, environmental sustainability, and financial self-reliance. This initiative will focus on the commercial production and sale of high-demand vermi-products including vermicompost, vermicompost tea, and live earthworm species to support the long-term sustainability of the Society’s programs and create entrepreneurial opportunities for students.

Vermiculture, the cultivation of earthworms to convert organic waste into valuable compost, presents a sustainable and scalable solution to local agricultural and environmental challenges. The vermicompost produced through this process is a rich, organic fertilizer that improves soil health, enhances crop yields, and reduces reliance on chemical inputs. In addition to solid vermicompost, the project will also produce vermicompost tea, a liquid biofertilizer increasingly used in urban gardening, organic farming, and nursery operations. Furthermore, the farm will maintain and breed various earthworm species that will be packaged and sold to farmers, gardeners, and agricultural institutions seeking to start or expand their own vermiculture operations.

The adjacent Incubator Shelter will function as both a protected breeding center for worms and a business-oriented training facility. It will house equipment for processing, packaging, and storing the vermi-products, and will serve as a space for student-led workshops, quality control activities, and business planning sessions. This shelter ensures year-round operations by providing a climate-resilient structure that protects the biological assets from extreme heat, rain, and other environmental fluctuations.

This project is not purely academic; it is built around a sustainable business model designed to generate consistent income. Revenues from the sale of vermicompost, vermicompost tea, and vermi spp will be reinvested into the Rational Society to support future educational programs, community outreach activities, and the expansion of the farm itself. In addition, select profits will be used to offer microgrants or support entrepreneurial projects initiated by student members. The farm will also explore partnerships with local farmers’ cooperatives, garden centers, and municipal waste authorities to scale production and maximize market reach.

By combining practical science with entrepreneurial thinking, this project exemplifies the Rational Society’s core mission: applying reason and evidence to solve real-world problems while fostering independence and innovation among students. The Vermiculture Farm and Incubator Shelter will serve as a working model of sustainable development in action, highlighting how biological science, ecological responsibility, and smart business strategies can be integrated into university life and student-led initiatives.

In summary, this project is designed to function as a revenue-generating enterprise rooted in ecological sustainability and scientific reasoning. It represents a long-term investment in both the intellectual growth and economic empowerment of N’Djamena University students, and stands as a demonstration of what rational, human-centered development can look like in practice.

Expected Income from Project, with Timeline

The Vermiculture Farm and Incubator Shelter project is expected to begin generating income within two months of construction and setup. By producing and selling vermicompost, vermicompost tea, and live earthworms, the project aims to generate an estimated monthly revenue of $400 to $700 once operations are fully established. Initial sales will focus on local farmers, gardeners, and small agricultural businesses, with potential to expand as the project gains recognition. Over the first year, the project anticipates earning approximately $1,800 to $2,400, contributing significantly to the financial sustainability of the N’Djamena University Rational Society. The incubator shelter will support continuous production, ensuring year-round availability of products despite seasonal changes. Project execution, including construction, training, and initial production phases, is planned to take approximately one month. This timeline allows for thorough preparation, student training, and community outreach to build a reliable customer base. The income generated will be reinvested into expanding operations, improving facilities, and supporting educational activities within the Society. Overall, the project is designed for steady growth, combining environmental sustainability with economic viability.
