Benin: New Lease for Larger Safe House for 21 Lesbians
The Benin Lesbian Safe House has been funded by Humanist Mutual Aid Network for 3 years. It currently provides temporary shelter and care for twenty-one vulnerable LGBTQ young women and gender-diverse individuals who rely on our safe house for security, stability, and access to essential support services.
Over the past year, the number of residents has increased significantly, making our current two-bedroom accommodation inadequate for their needs. The limited space has resulted in overcrowding, insufficient ventilation, and reduced privacy, creating conditions that are no longer appropriate for the well-being and dignity of the people under our care.
To address these challenges, we have identified a larger residential property that offers four bedrooms, a living room, a kitchen, and a pantry within a secure gated compound. The new accommodation will provide a safer and healthier environment, allowing residents to sleep comfortably, maintain better hygiene, and participate in daily activities in a setting that promotes healing and personal development.
The property is located in Number 52, Rue de Palmistes Ouidah, Benin.
The relocation grant will be used exclusively to secure the annual lease and move the residents into the new facility. Our group has already raised a significant portion of the required funds through savings and grant projects, but additional support is needed to complete the payment while maintaining basic operational expenses. This assistance will enable us to continue providing a safe, stable, and supportive home for those who depend on our services.
