Why are you humanist?
We became humanists because we wanted to live honest, meaningful lives based on kindness, truth, and compassion, rather than pretending to follow beliefs we no longer hold. Humanism to us means choosing reason, rejecting fear and shame, and building a life of dignity and mutual support. As former believers living in a society where free thought can lead to isolation or punishment, our group has given us friendship, courage, and a sense of family. We respect religious people but seek the freedom to live without religion. We aim to support others who feel alone and promote human dignity, critical thinking, and peace.
Project Description:
Our project is to start a Sewing and Tailoring Workshop. This small scale workshop will allow us to provide tailoring services to the community including mending clothes, customizing garments, and making affordable new clothing. Three members already has basic tailoring experience, and we will support training for others. This business can grow gradually as we reinvest our earnings. It will be operated by group members and will serve as a base for future community programs. It will empower women in our group especially, and provide a stable source of income for us all.
Budget:
Basic sewing machine (manual): $110
Sewing tools (scissors, tape, needles, threads, etc.): $40
Starter fabric and materials: $60
Rent for small workspace (home-based): $25
Marketing (flyers, signs, etc.): $15
Total: $250
Expected Income from Project, with Timeline:
We expect to begin earning within the first 3–4 weeks through mending services and small tailoring jobs. In the first 3 months, we estimate monthly income of $50–$70. By 6 months, we hope to double that by adding more services and possibly training others. As demand increases, we plan to expand by buying another sewing machine and offering fashion design and custom sewing.
Benefits to your Community:
This workshop will provide low cost tailoring and mending services to the local community, especially to low-income families. It also offers practical skills training for youth and women in our group. Beyond economic benefit, this project helps us build a base for further community outreach, like support for vulnerable people, and humanist events that promote compassion and dignity.
