What Humanism Means to Us

To us, humanism is a way of life that emphasizes human dignity, cooperation, responsibility, and practical solutions to community challenges. It encourages us to work together, use reason, and create opportunities that improve the living conditions of everyone. Humanism inspires us to promote fairness, self-reliance, and cooperation while ensuring that community resources are used for the benefit of all.

Through this project, we seek to apply these values by establishing a community-managed corn mill that will provide an affordable and accessible service while creating a sustainable source of income for our group. We believe that collective effort and responsible management can help our community become more economically secure and self-reliant.

Project Description

The Korhogo Humanist Movement proposes to establish a small, community-managed corn mill in Korhogo, Côte d’Ivoire. Corn is an important staple food in our community, and many households regularly need corn to be cleaned, milled, and processed for household consumption and small-scale food production. However, access to affordable milling services can be difficult, particularly for families with limited financial resources.

With support from HuMAN, we aim to purchase the essential equipment and materials required to establish and begin operating a community corn mill. The mill will provide affordable milling services to community members while creating a modest but continuous source of income for the Korhogo Humanist Movement.

The project will be managed cooperatively by members of the group. A small service fee will be charged for milling, with the income used first to cover operating expenses and maintenance and then to purchase fuel, replace worn parts, and maintain the sustainability of the mill.

Beyond providing a useful service, the project will strengthen our group's capacity for self-reliance and community development. It will create an income-generating activity that can support future humanitarian and community initiatives undertaken by the Korhogo Humanist Movement.

Expected Outcome from Project, with Timeline

Immediate Community Benefit (after initial launch):

The establishment of the corn mill will provide community members with a convenient and affordable local service for processing corn. Households will spend less time and money travelling to distant milling facilities, while the group will begin generating income from the service.

Ongoing Sustainability:

The corn mill will generate a modest and continuous revenue stream through affordable milling fees. Income will be used to purchase fuel and lubricants, maintain the equipment, replace damaged or worn parts, and gradually build a reserve for future repairs. Any surplus will be reinvested into the project or used to support other community activities of the Korhogo Humanist Movement.
