What does humanism mean to your group?

I (Esther Gyimah) grew up in a devout Christian family in Ghana, where faith was woven into the fabric of daily life. But as I ventured into the world beyond my community, I found herself questioning the beliefs I had held so dearly. Intrigued by the perspectives of renowned atheists and humanists, I delved into their works with an open mind. Through the writings of thinkers like Richard Dawkins, Bertrand Russell, and Ayaan Hirsi Ali, I discovered a profound liberation in their arguments for reason, science, and humanism.

Their eloquent critiques of religion's role in society resonated deeply with my own experiences and observations. With each page turned, I felt the weight of dogma lifting from my shoulders, replaced by a sense of empowerment and intellectual freedom. Embracing humanism and atheism, I found solace in the beauty of the natural world and the boundless potential of humanity, charting my own path with courage and conviction.

Humanism for me and my group means that Humanists are accountable to humanity, not to a deity. We give our lives meaning through how we live them. We reject violence as a means to spread beliefs. Humanism respects people, not ideas.

Project Description

A Takoradi Humanist Cafe & Computer Center can be beacon of learning, community development, and empowerment, providing valuable educational resources and skill-building opportunities. Our plan to use the cafe & center as a pay-per-use workspace to provide sustainability to our group. If we equip the center with a reliable internet connection, shelving units, a projector, and other essential equipment, we will have a resource-efficient environment that individuals can pay to use for work, study, and collaboration. The revenue generated will be reinvested into the center, enabling us to offer high-quality digital training for women in Takoradi and support the education and well-being of vulnerable girls who are aligned with humanist values.

Core components of this project are a Starlink satellite internet device to provide reliable, high-speed internet access in an area where traditional broadband is not easily accessible, shelving to maximize organization and space efficiency, and a projector to facilitate presentations, workshops, and community events. Additionally, the creation of a pay-per-use model for the workspace will attract professionals, entrepreneurs, and students who need a reliable, quiet, and equipped environment for work, offering them the option to pay for the space on an hourly basis.

This business model is designed not only to create a sustainable source of income for the center but also to provide a mechanism for reinvestment. The funds generated will directly support the center’s operations, including maintaining the facilities, offering free or subsidized digital training programs, and ensuring that vulnerable girls in Takoradi receive educational support and care.

The Takoradi Humanist Computer Center, through this transformation, will not only become a self-sustaining space but also a critical part of the local economy, empowering both individuals and the broader community through technology and education. This project will provide essential resources for women in Takoradi to gain digital literacy, opening doors for employment, entrepreneurship, and community leadership. Additionally, the profits generated from the pay-per-use workspace will help ensure that vulnerable girls in the area who align with humanist values and need assistance receive the support and education they deserve.

The proposed transformation of the Takoradi Humanist Computer Center into a pay-per-use workspace, equipped with the necessary technology and infrastructure, will not only make the center a sustainable entity but will also significantly contribute to the empowerment of women and vulnerable girls in Takoradi. By equipping the center with Starlink internet, shelving, a projector, and other essential resources, this project will create an environment conducive to learning, collaboration, and community development.

Project Timeline and Estimated profit

The Takoradi Humanist Computer Center plans to implement a pay-per-use model for the newly equipped workspace. With an hourly rate of $5 per user, and assuming an average of 10 users per day for 20 days per month, the center can expect to generate $1,000 per month in revenue. This amount will cover ongoing operational costs such as maintenance, electricity, and the salaries of staff managing the workspace.

The income generated will directly contribute to sustaining the center’s operations, maintaining the newly acquired equipment, and funding the educational programs for women in Takoradi. Additionally, a portion of the profits will be directed towards supporting vulnerable girls in the community, ensuring they receive the care and educational support they need.

Over the course of the first six months, the projected revenue is expected to total around $6,000, which will be used to fund digital literacy programs for local women, allowing them to acquire essential skills for employment, entrepreneurship, and community development. The project will also provide scholarships and educational support to vulnerable girls, empowering them with the tools they need to succeed.

The project Timeline:

● FIrst 14 days: Procurement and delivery of the Starlink internet device, shelving units, and projector. The equipment will be installed, and the space will be reorganized to optimize its layout for use as a pay-per-use workspace.

● 21 days : The center will be officially launched as a pay-per-use facility. The first set of users will be invited, and promotional efforts will begin to attract regular clients. Marketing materials will be developed to promote the new workspace and its hourly rental options.

● 28 days : Full operation of the pay-per-use workspace will begin. The center will also initiate its digital training programs for women, with a focus on basic digital skills, online entrepreneurship, and digital literacy.

Benefits to your Community:

Digital Empowerment: By providing access to computers and the internet, the Humanist Women in Takoradi will significantly improve their digital literacy, allowing them to pursue online work and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Sustainable Energy Access: With the solar panel system, the center will enjoy a reliable and cost-effective energy source, promoting environmental sustainability while minimizing operational costs.

Community Development: This project will foster a sense of community and shared responsibility, where the women can collaborate, learn, and support each other in their digital ventures.

Economic Empowerment: The knowledge and skills gained in the computer center will directly translate into increased economic opportunities for the women, contributing to their financial independence and social mobility.
